Advocacy

"If you don't like something, change it. Don't complain. -Maya Angelou"

Welcome to Advocacy Central. Consider this your official invitation to start changing the world.

Confused about advocacy? Here's a quick lesson:

  • Advocacy: organized activism related to a particular set of issues.
  • Activism: intentional action to bring about social or political change.
Advocacy

In short, advocacy is intentional action designed to bring about change on an issue - any issue. It is not important WHAT you stand for. It is vital THAT you stand for something. What is important to you? When will you begin to work for positive change in the world?

This web resource is intended to enable and encourage CMU students to become active citizens by providing information and resources on many social and environmental issues. In all circumstances, an effort is made to highlight any current action/organization on CMU's campus.

The information provided is separated into issue areas, with information and web resource links provided for each issue. This is not necessarily a comprehensive listing of all related sites and resources, but serves as your first step into the world of advocacy and social responsibility.

The Volunteer Center does not endorse the issues, organizations, or actions presented on this page. This resource is simply intended to facilitate individual commitment to pro-active civic engagement and social change.

Advocacy Central is a work-in-progress - please contact the Volunteer Center if you have trouble accessing any of the resources, have additional resources, or are interested in pursuing action on a specific issue area.
