Issue Day
Issue Day provides advocacy resources to the CMU community through a one-day conference. Presentations on a wide range of issues and subject areas allow participants from around the state to increase both the breadth and depth of their knowledge about particular issues.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
MLK Week is an event that the Volunteer Center supports with Minority Student Services. These week long events include a Peace Breakfast and Panel Discussion, Unity March and Rally, several keynote speakers, a Day of Service, a Candlelight Vigil, an Affirmative Action panel, and ends with the Unity Ball and Dinner. In the past, the MLK Day of Service was hosted at the Isabella County Soup Kitchen. The opportunities included chef and food servers in two shifts, from 8-11am or 11am-2pm.
Ribbons to Remember
Nicholas Pietrunti passed away on September 11, 2001 while working in the first tower of the World Trade Center. He was employed at Cantor Fitzgerald as a data entry clerk. Nicholas was active in his community, serving as an assistant coach for the local roller-hockey league and as a parishioner in his church, despite the challenge of being deaf.
In honor of Nicholas Pietrunti, the CMU Volunteer Center is continuing the Ribbons to Remember Service Project, a living memorial through the Points of Light Foundation's USA Initiative. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to memorialize Nicholas Pietrunti and all who passed away on September 11 by wearing a red, white, and blue ribbon all week.
In addition to wearing a ribbon to remember the week of September 11, the CMU Volunteer Center encourages all students, faculty, and staff to join us in honoring these fallen heroes by having a moment of silence on September 11 at 8:46am, the time of the first plane crash. If you are unable to observe silence at this time, please take a moment at your convenience to remember those we lost.
Ribbons are available outside the CMU Volunteer Center, located in the Bovee UC 107, the week of September 11.
Be My Neighbor Day
Be My Neighbor Day is an event that allows the students of CMU to give back to the Mt. Pleasant community. Students will have an opportunity to do a variety of tasks in conjunction with non-profit agencies in this area. Some opportunities include cleaning yards for the elderly through Commission on Aging, staining Timber Town for Parks and Rec, volunteering at the Isabella County Soup Kitchen, and yard work for the Women's Aid Service.
