Jody Patton
Jody Patton has helped to organize the efforts of the College of Business faculty and staff in volunteering with the Isabella Community Soup Kitchen. Jody was troubled by the increasing need for the soup kitchen's services and the lack of resources available to meet the growing need. Jody asked her colleagues in the College of Business Administration to help and collaboratively they created a campaign that called "Operation Have a Heart". Through their efforts they collected food and cash during the weeks prior to Valentine's Day and were able to deliver 500 pounds of donated food and $1,775 the Friday before Valentine's Day.
Jody also asked her colleagues on the development and alumni staff if they would consider a similar campaign within their areas in subsequent months. The staff in the Carlin Alumni House picked up the idea and delivered more food and cash to the Soup Kitchen in March.
Jody was inspired to become more active in volunteer efforts for several reasons, including the current state of the economy and a personal determination to help raise awareness and volunteer as much as possible. For Jody, volunteerism is important because so many human services would not be available if not for volunteers. She doesn't know of a nonprofit organization that can make it without volunteers. "The nonprofit sector is HUGE and the value of volunteers, giving their expertise on boards and their time in the trenches, cannot be overstated."
Health Professions Residential College
During the current academic year, the students of the Health Professions Residential College have provided over 3,000 hours of documented service to CMU, the Mt. Pleasant community, and in their home communities. They have touched the lives of many by serving as soccer coaches, hockey coaches, soup kitchen workers, Community Compassion Outreach and Christmas Outreach volunteers, child care volunteers, helping with blood drives, child identification program volunteers, and countless other community needs. These active, dedicated students also serve as recruiters for Central Michigan University at CMU and You Day and the summer Health Professions Day Open House.
