Robert Ebner

Robert Ebner

Robert Ebner, Director of University Events, has been selected as the Volunteers Are Central staff winner for October 2008. Robert has had plenty of experience when it comes to fundraising for the fight against cancer. Since the early 1990's, Robert had been working as a co-chair with Relay for Life within the Mount Pleasant area. In 1998, the Community Cancer Services was in dire need of financial support, so Robert and his wife used their knowledge of running this type of event and used it to start the "Into the Light" cancer walk. The walk is unique in that all of the funds that are raised go directly into the Mount Pleasant area. Robert's efforts are driven in part by his wife, a cancer survivor.

Along with working with the "Into the Light" cancer walk, Robert has been on the board for the Mt. Pleasant Summerfest for over twenty years, is on the Christmas Sing committee for downtown Mt. Pleasant, helps with the Wheatland Music Festival, and participates with a variety of organizations such as the VFW, the Chamber, Downtown DBA, Mt. Pleasant schools, Parks and Recreation, and the Red Cross.

Megan Kowalski

Megan Kowalski, a graduate student from Muskegon, has been selected as the Volunteers Are Central student winner for October 2008. Megan was actively involved in the planning and implementing of the Mischief Managed. Megan became involved with the program through a different RSO. She was the president of an organization called the Writing Circle during the 2006-2007 academic year. The group reorganized in 2007 and became a Harry Potter book club called "Dumbledore's Army".

Megan's passion for volunteering with the Mischief Managed conference comes from her love of literature. "While it might seem like sitting around talking about fictional people and fictional situation isn't applicable to our own society, we've actually discussed a lot of current issues through Harry Potter. This is one reason I feel literature and reading are so valuable: it helps us think about our world with more of a critical stance than an emotional one."

Megan has volunteered at other campus events including Say Hey Week and ReachOut. She is also volunteers as a Second Grade team leader for their children's ministry at Mt Pleasant Community Church.
